MEET THE ARTIST
Michael Gabriele
New Jersey artist, Michael Gabriele, aims to capture a moment. Inspired by landscape and still life, Gabriele introduces a series of his work from 2018 in this exhibition.
As a 1975 graduate of Montclair State University, Gabriele has exhibited his artwork at galleries and museums in northern New Jersey for over 30 years. Most recently, he was featured in one-man shows at the office gallery of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, Montclair, and the Nutley Public Library. The George Segal Gallery at Montclair State University has selected his artwork five times for display in the prestigious “Art Connections” juried exhibit.
Gabriele is a member of the executive board of Allied Artists of America, New York, the advisory board of the Clifton Arts Center, and served for two years (2011 and 2012) as the “artist in residence” for students at Clifton High School’s Art Academy program. His art memberships include Studio Montclair Inc., the Pastel Society of New Jersey, and the West Essex Art Association. In addition to his artwork, Gabriele has written four books on New Jersey history, all published by The History Press.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I’ve been exhibiting paintings, pastels, photographs and drawings at New Jersey galleries, museums, and libraries since the late 1980s. I’ve won awards and had my work accepted at juried exhibitions sponsored by the Allied Artists of America, the George Segal Gallery at Montclair State University; the Pastel Society of New Jersey; the Clifton Association of Artists; the Art Association of Rutherford; and the West Essex Art Association.
The process for my artwork starts with a series of drawings, and then using the drawings as a guide to experiment (with composition, light and dark patterns, and color) on pastel paper to achieve a finished work. Much like a photographer, my aim as an artist is to “capture a moment.” I’m inspired by landscape and still life.
The ability to express myself in art has been a blessing and a significant part of my life—an inspiration, education, journey and confession. Working as an artist has taught me how to see the quiet dignity and beauty in everyday life.
These days, as a member of various cultural organizations, I enjoy supporting the arts (painting, theater, local history, and music) for the enrichment and “greater good” of the community.
In addition to artwork, since 2010 I’ve written four books on New Jersey history, all published by The History Press. I’m 1975 graduate of Montclair State University and I reside in Clifton, NJ.
